Game Care
In addition to selecting a reputable taxidermist, game care and specimen selection are extremely important in ensuring you receive a quality mount. Thus, we've provided an entire page to assist our customers in taking the right steps towards game care in the field.
- If possible, retrieve your downed bird yourself. Refrain from holding the bird by its neck; rather, hold it by its feet. This will prevent damage to the neck area and loss of feathers. If the bird is still alive, do not ring the bird. Simply grasp the bird under its wings tightly. This will suffocate the bird within five minutes without any damage.
- Place the bird in a dry place out of direct sunlight to prevent the growth of bacteria. Once you have access to a freezer, simply tuck the head under its wing and place in a plastic bag. Try to get the specimen to a taxidermist ASAP!
- Immature and pin-feathered birds may present problems for the taxidermist. The feathers may not be colored, feather loss may occur during the taxidermy process, and other issues may arise. It is best to choose a mature bird for your taxidermy desires; however, immature birds can be mounted. Please consult your taxidermist to determine the best pose for your trophy specimen!
